Another Trip to Kanazawa & Another Machiya Stay
I’ve returned to Kanazawa in the last few years multiple times, not only for work but for pleasure too and it’s always wonderful when my travels work out that I can experience another darling Machiya for a night or two. My first time staying in a Machiya was also in Kanazawa.
This time around, with my parents visiting in Japan for a month, I stayed in this sweet Machiya located in the quiet Moriyama residential area of Kanazawa, a leisurely walk to Higashi-chaya, the tea and geisha district of the city. The famed Omicho (fresh seafood) market is also a short walk away, which was perfect for me to pick up an easy lunch and dinner to enjoy in the comfort of my machiya.

A Stay at Temari Machiya
Aptly named Temari, this particular Machiya (one of four standing next to each other - perfect to reserve for multiple families travelling together) is decorated with a hanging art installation of multiple Temari balls in a myriad of colours and patterns. Temari are a traditional folk art & craft made from embroidery that was used for decoration and childhood games.
Each of the four machiya host different art installations created by an individual local artist.

Within this machiya, a total of 5 guests can enjoy a stay, the upstairs bedroom holds 2 western-style beds and a sofa bed (plus a small mini fridge which I loved for putting my snacks within easy reach! haha!) whilst downstairs is the beautiful tatami room, where two futons can be laid out or you can enjoy as a additional living room
Enjoy a Relaxing Stay
Other features include wifi, floor heating, the usual amenities and a beautiful indoor hinoki bath where one can soak away after exploring (this is why I always bring my own bath salts just in case! haha)
Note this is a smaller machiya, so there isn’t a full kitchen (an electric stove is available) nor a laundry machine, so it’s perfect for those who wish to explore, enjoy meals out and small meals in, ie. like fresh sushi bought from Omicho market
