TEORI SUSHI

Another fave lunch spot in my favourite Kyoto local district; Karasuma-Oike/Shijo area (notice the theme, I have always spent a lot of time in these areas whenever I visit Kyoto) where housed in a lovely old Machiya is this beautiful contemporary take on a deconstructed sushi.

Literally meaning “handwoven sushi”, AWOMB presents you with a photogenic platter of seasonal ingredients accompanied with miso soup, rice & crisp roasted nori (seawood); allowing you to partake in the creation of your own essentially “temaki” sushi roll.

If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed in what to do, the restaurant provides you with instructions in both English & Japanese of what to do & what the seasonal produce is.

TIPS:

  • Enjoy the tasting flight of seasonal, regional sake to enjoy the flavours of the area! A good introduction to simple sake pairing

  • RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED! You can book the Karasuma Honten (the main branch) here

  • There is one more branch in Kyoto, I believe closer to Kyoto station, but I prefer the quieter local area.

NEARBY KYOTO ACCOMMODATION (places I’ve stayed within ~30mins walk)
